Colorado Wildfire Mitigation Funding & Incentives for Homeowners

Wildfire risk is real in Colorado’s wildland-urban interface. The good news? Homeowners can access several funding programs and tax incentives to help reduce through-home fire risk — and Fireline Goats is here to help you leverage them.

Income Tax Incentives
  • Wind & Wildfire Home Protection Mitigation Program

This statewide funding initiative offers two paths:

Up to $30,000 in support (a mix of grant + forgivable or traditional loan) depending on income and reconstruction needs.

A $5,000 grant-only option for mitigation work (no income requirement).
Eligible projects include upgraded windows, fire-resistant vents, noncombustible decking & fencing, gutter guards, and more.

📌 Apply via the state’s Housing Recovery Program or mitigation-only application.

  • Forest Restoration & Wildfire Risk Mitigation (FRWRM) Grants

Run by the Colorado State Forest Service, this competitive program supports community-scale forest health and wildfire risk mitigation projects.

For example, the 2025 application window is Aug 1 – Oct 9.

  • Colorado Wildfire Mitigation Income Tax Credit / Subtraction

For tax years 2023–2027, qualifying landowners may claim an income tax credit for actual, out-of-pocket wildfire mitigation expenses.

In previous years, a subtraction (deduction) was allowed.

Note: grant-funded costs are not eligible for the credit/subtraction.

To claim, file DR 0104CR (credit) or DR 0104AD (subtraction) with supporting receipts.

  • Local & County Programs

Many counties, cities, and HOAs within Colorado also offer cost-share, rebates, or assessment funding for mitigation efforts. Examples include:

Boulder County’s Wildfire Partners rebate program (up to $500)

Delta County’s Wildfire Ready Home cost-share

City or HOA-level mitigation funding in WUI zones

Pro Tip: Be proactive. Many mitigation grants and tax credits have limited funds and strict deadlines. The sooner you apply and begin work, the more likely you’ll secure support.
